Joseph Horan

Joseph HoranJoseph Horan joined the Mines faculty in the fall of 2012. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Florida State University and his B.A. in History and French from Colorado State University.  Dr. Horan specializes in the Environmental History of Europe and the Atlantic World, with an emphasis on the Napoleonic era.  His dissertation examines an extensive effort to promote large-scale cotton cultivation in France and Italy that was carried out by the Napoleonic regime. Dr. Horan’s dissertation has been recognized with honorable mention for the Parker-Schmitt Dissertation Award in European History and for the Rachel Carson Prize in Environmental History.  Articles by Dr. Horan have been published in the journals International Review of Social History and French History and as part of the edited volume New Perspectives on the History of Life Sciences and Agriculture.
